We are all creatures of habit and that can be a good thing. It is a good idea to develop some habits like brushing your teeth or waking up consistently for work. If it weren't for our ability to form habits, these daily tasks would become impossible to keep up with since they would all seem like unique activities.
Unfortunately, there is a negative side to being creatures of habit. We can easily fall into a routine that slowly turns into a rut. It's easy to feel like today is the same as yesterday, which will be the same tomorrow. Weekly and months fly by before you realize you've been in auto-pilot mode. There are many strategies to take back your life, but we will focus on just a couple:
- Take a 15 minute break from everything you are doing once a day. This isn't a big time commitment, but it could have big impacts to your outlook on life. Use this time to just slow down and not think about anything that would currently be running through your mind. You would be surprised how much 15 minutes could slow down your perspective.
- Set some goals and make a plan of attack to accomplish them. They could be short term goals like finishing a new book or long term goals like getting a new certification. Either way, the road map to completion will definitely shake up your routine.
